Across East Africa, banana farming is more than agriculture; it is food security, culture, income, and now, an emerging green enterprise. In countries such as Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi, bananas are grown widely by smallholder farmers for cooking, roasting, brewing and dessert use. Uganda is especially central to this story: banana is a major food crop for about half of the population, around 75% of farmers cultivate it, and annual per-capita consumption is estimated at 220–400 kg, among the highest in the world.
Yet behind every banana harvest lies a largely underused resource: the banana pseudo-stem. After fruiting, the banana plant is cut down because it produces only once. Traditionally, the stem is left to decompose in the field as mulch or is treated as farm waste. But this “waste” contains strong natural fibres that can be extracted, dried, softened, spun and transformed into textiles, ropes, handicrafts, mats, paper, sanitary products, hair extensions and composite materials.
Banana fibre extraction begins with harvesting the pseudo-stem after the banana bunch has been removed. The outer layers are separated, then passed through a decorticator or manually scraped to pull out long fibres. These fibres are washed, dried, combed and graded. For textile use, additional softening and spinning processes are needed because raw banana fibre is naturally coarse. In craft production, however, the fibre can be used more directly for woven products, baskets, lampshades, rugs and decorative items.
The scale of opportunity is significant. More than 50 million people in East Africa depend on highland bananas for food or income, and the crop’s annual production value is estimated at about US$4.3 billion. This means banana fibre is not a niche idea built around a scarce raw material; it is a circular economy opportunity linked to one of the region’s most important crops.
Uganda is currently one of the most visible centres of banana fibre innovation in East Africa. The TEXFAD enterprise in Mukono has been turning banana stems into products such as rugs, lampshades and hair extensions. According to Associated Press reporting, the company works with farmer groups, pays for dried fibre, employs more than 30 people, exports some products to Europe, and returns extraction residues to farmers for use as manure. This model shows how banana fibre can create additional income without competing with food production.
Research and innovation are also expanding. The Banatex-EA project, supported through sustainable manufacturing and environmental pollution initiatives, is working to upscale banana fibre value addition in East Africa by improving extraction, processing and product development. Its goal is to reduce organic waste from banana plantations while producing higher-value market products from banana pseudo-stems. In Uganda, researchers have also identified indigenous varieties such as Kayinja as promising sources of strong, spinnable fibre for textiles and hair extensions.
The environmental case is compelling. Banana fibre is biodegradable, renewable and extracted from agricultural residues that already exist within farming systems. Unlike synthetic fibres, it does not rely on petroleum-based raw materials. Unlike cotton, it does not require farmers to allocate separate land purely for fibre production. This is important in East Africa, where land pressure, climate stress and smallholder livelihoods are closely connected.
Economically, banana fibre could strengthen rural value chains. Farmers can earn extra income from stems that previously had little commercial value. Youth and women’s groups can participate in extraction, drying, weaving, tailoring, product finishing and marketing. Local enterprises can build cottage industries around eco-friendly packaging, interior décor, fashion accessories and institutional branding products. For NGOs and community-based organisations, banana fibre also offers a practical entry point into climate-smart livelihoods, circular economy training and women-led enterprise development.
However, the sector still faces challenges. Many producers rely on basic machinery, which limits fibre quality and production volume. Textile-grade fibre requires consistent softening, spinning and blending technologies. Market access is also uneven: while handmade crafts can be sold locally and internationally, industrial textile markets demand standardisation, quality assurance and reliable supply. Regulatory barriers and high production costs have also been cited as constraints to scaling banana fibre products.
For East Africa to unlock the full potential of banana fibre, investment is needed in three areas: appropriate extraction technologies for farmer groups, product design and market development, and research into fibre quality across different banana varieties. Partnerships between universities, textile firms, NGOs, county governments, farmer cooperatives and green enterprise funds will be critical.
Banana fibre extraction is not simply about making products from stems. It is about rethinking waste, adding value at the farm level, and building a greener rural economy. In a region where bananas already feed millions, the next opportunity is to let the same crop clothe, furnish, employ and empower communities.
